Nonparametric Welfare Analysis for Discrete Choice: Levels and Differences of Individual and Social Welfare

چکیده
Empirical welfare analyses often impose stringent parametric assumptions on individuals’ preferences and neglect unobserved preference heterogeneity. In this paper, we develop a framework to conduct individual social analysis for discrete choice that does not suffer from these drawbacks. We first adapt the broad class of measures introduced by Fleurbaey (2009) settings where is discrete. Allowing unrestricted, heterogeneity, become random variables. then show distribution objects can be derived probabilities, which estimated nonparametrically cross-sectional data. addition, derive nonparametric results joint differences, as well welfare. The former an important tool in determining whether those who benefit price change belong disproportionately were initially well-off. An empirical application illustrates methods.

Choice and individual welfare
We propose an abstract method of systematically assigning a “rational” preference to non-rationalizable choice data. We define an individual welfare functional as a mapping from stochastic choice functions into weak orders. A stochastic choice function (or choice distribution) gives the empirical frequency of choices for any possible opportunity set (framing factors may also be incorporated int...

Exact consumers surplus and deadweight loss are the most widely used welfare and economic efficiency measures. These measures can be computed from demand functions in straightforward ways. Nonparametric estimation can be used to estimate the welfare measures. In doing so it seems important to account correctly for unobserved heteroeneity given the high degree of unexplained demand variation oft...

متن کاملIntroduction to Social Choice and Welfare
Social choice theory is concerned with the evaluation of alternative methods of collective decision-making, as well as with the logical foundations of welfare economics. In turn, welfare economics is concerned with the critical scrutiny of the performance of actual and/or imaginary economic systems, as well as with the critique, design and implementation of alternative economic policies. The Ha...
